No, you do not need a GP referral. Self-referrals are welcome. You can contact me directly to arrange an assessment for your child. A GP referral is helpful but not required.
How self-referral works
You can get in touch directly by email or through the website contact form. I will review your enquiry personally and we'll discuss whether an assessment with me is appropriate for your child. If it is, we'll arrange the first appointment — typically within 2–4 weeks.
You do not need to wait for your GP to make a referral, and you do not need your GP's permission to seek a private assessment.
Why a GP referral can be helpful
Although a referral isn't required, having your GP involved can be beneficial:
Medical history. A GP referral letter often includes useful background — developmental milestones, previous concerns, any relevant medical history. This helps me prepare for the first appointment.
Shared care. If your child is diagnosed with ADHD and medication is recommended, a shared care arrangement with your GP may be possible. Having the GP involved from the start makes this smoother.
Continuity of care. I write to your child's GP after every appointment with a detailed summary. This ensures your child's NHS records are up to date and their GP is aware of any diagnoses or treatment.
What if my GP won't refer?
Some parents approach me because their GP declined to refer to the NHS pathway, or because NHS waiting times are very long. Others come because they feel their concerns haven't been taken seriously.
Whatever the reason, you are entitled to seek a private assessment for your child. You do not need anyone's permission. Simply get in touch directly.
What about insurance?
If you plan to use health insurance (such as WPA), your insurer may require a GP referral letter before they will cover the cost. Check with your insurer before booking. I am a registered WPA provider.

Will you write to my GP after the assessment?
Yes, always. With your consent, I write a detailed letter to your child's GP after every appointment summarising findings, diagnosis and recommendations.
Can I be referred by another professional?
Yes — referrals from paediatricians, psychologists, SENCOs, health visitors and other professionals are all welcome alongside self-referrals.
Do I need a referral for a remote assessment?
No. The same applies for remote video consultations as for face-to-face. You can self-refer regardless of how the appointment is delivered.
What information should I provide when I get in touch?
Your child's name, date of birth, a brief description of your concerns, and any relevant background. The more detail you can share upfront, the more efficiently we can arrange the right assessment.
